The SWIM STRAIT mission focuses on individuals in early Recovery. By sharing my story with residents of treatment centers and recovery houses (and my ambitions to swim various "STRAITS" around the world), we demonstrate what is possible in sobriety. This provides encouragement for recovering individuals to discover and reach their own potential.
The framework of Swim Strait provides a framework for goal setting, discipline and achievement that can be adapted into various environments as the recovering individual progresses in their sober lifestyle.
Importantly, the program is intended to be SUPPLEMENTAL to a foundational program of Recovery, such as a 12-Step Program.
Upon engaging with the various groups and individuals we encounter in sober-living communities, we offer them an opportunity to participate in a swim program. Whether learning to swim, improving rudimentary skills or fine-tuning a more developed regimen, achieving fitness in an aquatic environment has been proven to be an especially effective tonic. It is both active and meditative, simultaneously exhilarating and peaceful.
We also emphasize the fact that swimming is not the key to their long-term Recovery. Having a solid program, whether 12-Step or other is the key. Physical fitness in general and swimming in particular are simply supplemental ways to enhance their program of choice, enrich their lives and set them on a path towards discovering their own motivation.
The program provides a framework and curriculum for achievement through goal setting. The examples we provide demonstrate that setting goals is not always about success or failure, but rather about experiencing GROWTH.
Where possible, we organize swim sessions at local aquatic facilities on a weekly basis. Our fundraising efforts offset the cost of access to these pools, insure the availability of necessary gear, safety equipment and supervision, and provide for any ancillary cost such as transportation.
RAISING AWARENESS, RAISING FUNDS
My own Solo Marathon Swimming endeavors bring attention and fundraising to the entire mission. I have raised over $5,000 to date for The Herren Project through simple grassroots campaigns. My impending attempts at some of the world's most challenging swims will focus on fundraising Tens of Thousand more - both for Recovery causes and ocean-based environmental causes.
A WIDER AUDIENCE
These solo swim events are also being documented for possible media distribution, which will serve to tie together my personal adventures in swimming and journey of Recovery, juxtaposed with the collaborative nature of these achievements, and the Swimming Strait program which highlights the physical and mental health benefits of swimming - and a creation of community.
Ultimately, overcoming any of life's challenges requires a "solo" effort through the use of our own tools, but the discovery of those tools often requires the help of others.
My swimming events raise awareness for my initiatives and raise funds for worthy causes, but the efforts come at a sizable expense.
An investment in underwriting the expenses associated with these swims will not only help to offset the costs incurred in the undertaking of these endeavors - such as the chartering of escort vessels & support crews - but will also enable your organization to be a visible participant in our cause.
Our swim expeditions promise to provide groundbreaking exposure for all collaborators. This is an investment that has the potential to provide rewards that are both financial, inspirational and motivational, and an opportunity to identify your organization as an advocate for the power of transformation through teamwork and Recovery.
I'm excited to announce that we have created a team of swimmers to take on the Catalina Channel in 2022. The team is comprised of men & women from around the country who are supportive of the Recovery community and moved to inspire others by demonstrating what's possible. Although we have a core group of swimmers of various abilities, we need a few more to complete the team. A high level of swim skill is not required - just a willingness to train towards swimming for an hour in the open ocean.
I have raised thousands of dollars to date for The Herren Foundation through grassroots fundraising efforts at each of my events. The continuation of the progressively larger scale of these swims requires sponsorship.
Join OUR Team and I'll swim in YOUR name!
